Mid Suffolk is an area of agriculture, market towns, historic churches and ancient sites

Built c 1474-80 by Sir James Tyrell, the Chapel of
St. Nicholas Gipping stands in an idyllic situation
and is an example of late Perpendicular
- Mid Suffolk covers a large area with over 120 towns and villages.
- The landscape is mainly flat or gently undulating, with small woods and hedged fields – some of the hedges having been recently replanted.
- Recently the Hundred Lane network of green lanes has been reopened to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders (but not to motorised vehicles).
- Mid Suffolk is mainly covered in boulder-clay and the large number of moated medieval sites is related to the water-holding properties of this clay.
- The area is rich in old timber-framed and flint barns.
- In the towns, villages and countryside there are many fine ancient timber-framed houses and cottages.
- Both the landscape and the villages of the district are very vulnerable to buildings, both residential, agricultural and industrial, which are out of scale with their surroundings and use materials and designs which are insensitive to the environs.
