Suffolk Beauty - Modern can be Beautiful too

Following last year's successful competition, we are setting another challenge for the county’s many skilled snappers.
Last year we asked what does Suffolk Beauty mean to you? Not surprising many of the entries were of our beautiful heritage buildings as well as stunning landscape shots.
But at SPS we believe that change can be good and modern buildings can be beautiful too.
To celebrate good design we are launching our second competition in the summer of this year. To do this, we’ve teamed up both with the Suffolk Design Review Panel, which was set up to encourage high levels design in new development and Archant publishers of the EADT.
Fiona Cairns, director of the Society, explained the rationale for this year's focus.
“We are deeply concerned about new housing developments that have low levels of design quality and originality and make little or no effort to reflect or enhance the unique qualities of our county. But that isn’t to say that there aren’t examples of good modern buildings, both in their design and how they fit in with other buildings or the natural landscape".

We are asking everyone to take a photograph of a single or group of modern buildings which you really like and which exhibits good design. These can be located within Suffolk or beyond its boundaries. We are defining Modern as anything built after 1945 and are looking for images that reflect fresh and exciting architecture that people are happy to live with and that Suffolk is, or would be, proud of. This could be anything from a small extension to a housing estate or even a public building.
Entries to the competition open on 1 July and the deadline for submissions is 28 February 2019 . A panel will then select a short-list with the winners due to be announced in Spring 2019. Prizes will be awarded - details to follow soon.
