Suffolk’s landscape is rich and varied. From its low-lying coast of shingle and sand; its ancient woodland, forest, and lowland heaths; its farmland, valley meadowlands, estuaries, marshes and fenland; as well as its historic towns and villages, are all characteristic of the special landscapes of Suffolk.

The quality of these varied landscapes is important to us. They help to create a sense of place and we passionately believe that development should seek to protect landscape quality as well as design quality.

Suffolk’s landscapes are an integral part of our natural heritage and are a major focus of SPS’ work. We work to ensure that wherever possible new development enhances and protects our natural heritage. We also represent CPRE, The Countryside Charity in Suffolk.

Suffolk has to two nationally designated landscapes: the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape in the east and the Dedham Vale National Landscape in the south. Other special and distinctive landscapes such as the Brecks and Fenlands in the west and the Waveney Valley in the north of the county are often described as Valued Landscapes.
